EU Digital Product Passport Deadline Looms: RFID Gains Traction as the Preferred Data Carrier

Apr 08, 2026

With the European Union‘s Digital Product Passport (DPP) registry set to launch by July 2026, and mandatory enforcement beginning in 2027 for batteries, textiles, and consumer electronics, industries across the globe are racing to equip their products with scannable, durable digital identities.

The DPP, mandated under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), requires that every product sold in the EU carry a digital record documenting its entire lifecycle — from raw material sourcing and manufacturing to repair, recycling, and end-of-life treatment. The goal is to enable circular economy models, improve supply chain transparency, and empower consumers to make informed choices.

Why RFID Is Emerging as the Frontrunner

While QR codes and NFC tags are viable for certain applications, industry analysts and early adopters are increasingly turning to UHF RFID for high-volume product categories. The reasons are clear:

  • Batch reading: A single RFID reader can capture hundreds of tags per second, making warehouse receiving, inventory counts, and checkout automation orders of magnitude faster than line-of-sight alternatives.

  • Long read range: UHF RFID works up to 10 meters, enabling bulk scanning without touching each item.

  • Durability: Unlike printed labels, industrial-grade RFID tags can withstand moisture, temperature extremes, and mechanical stress — essential for products that stay in use for years.

According to market research, the European retail automation market is projected to grow from $3.18 billion in 2025 to $9.67 billion by 2034, representing a compound annual growth rate of 13.15%. A significant portion of this growth is directly attributed to DPP-driven RFID adoption.

Early Adopters Are Already Moving

Major European retailers and global brands have begun piloting RFID-based DPP systems. In the apparel sector, where RFID has been used for inventory management for years, the transition to DPP compliance is relatively straightforward — existing RFID infrastructure simply needs to be linked to the upcoming EU registry.

More challenging are categories like electronics with metal casings and automotive parts, where ordinary RFID tags fail due to signal interference. This has driven demand for specialty tags — flexible on-metal labels, hard tags, and industrial-grade options that maintain read reliability throughout a product’s lifecycle.

A Growing Ecosystem of Suppliers

As demand accelerates, a diverse ecosystem of RFID hardware providers is stepping up to serve the European market. Established names like Impinj and Zebra continue to dominate the high end, while Chinese manufacturers are gaining ground with competitive pricing, full-stack product lines, and shorter lead times.

Among them, SeeMore IoT Technology Co., Ltd. (SeeMore IoT) has positioned itself as a notable supplier. With a core team of 15-year RFID veterans and a track record of delivering million-RMB projects across six continents, the Shenzhen-based original manufacturer offers a complete hardware suite — fixed readers, handheld terminals, antennas, and specialty tags including flexible on-metal and industrial laundry labels. Its products are tuned for both FCC and ETSI frequency bands, ensuring compliance across European markets. The company also provides free samples, encoding services, and solution consulting to help customers navigate the DPP transition.

What’s Next

The July 2026 registry launch is less than 15 months away. For exporters and retailers selling into Europe, the message from industry observers is consistent: start hardware evaluations now. Delaying until the 2027 enforcement deadline risks supply chain disruptions and last-minute scrambling for certified components.

As one industry analyst put it, “DPP is not a niche regulation. It will touch every physical product sold in Europe. The companies that treat it as an opportunity — to digitize their supply chains and build consumer trust — will come out ahead. Those that wait will pay the penalty.”
